There is a really great short history of Earth Day on the Huffington Post today from writer/blogger Bill Lucey. As I’m sure you know, tomorrow is the 40th anniversary of Earth Day.
Earth Day’s original intention was to find a way to increase environmental awareness and to promote urgently needed federal legislation to deal with an alarming ecological crisis. Among the great accomplishments that came out of the environmental movement include the formation of the Environmental Protection Agency, the Clean Air Act, the Clean Water Act, the Endangered Species Act, and many more.
To read the entire article you can visit the Huffington Post here.

Crafted in classic designs with pleasing soft-edged contours, Renewal by Andersen® windows make a beautiful addition to any home. Because our Fibrex® composite frames are so strong and stable, we can make them narrow and devote the maximum amount of window area to the glass. This allows more light to stream into your room while still maintaining a high degree of energy efficiency.
Be inspired and get ideas for your window replacement project by browsing our photo gallery.
Of course, with Earth Day this week it’s a great time to think about ways to improve the energy efficiency of your home. Replacement windows from Renewal By Andersen are not only gorgeous, but they can greatly reduce your energy consumption. Stop by our Tempe showroom on Saturday, April 24 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. for our special Earth Day sales event!

We all know it makes environmental sense to switch your standard light bulbs to compact fluorescent bulbs. In fact, in past years we have given away CFLs at our showroom as part of our Earth Day events. But what do you do with your CFLs once they do finally dim?
“CFLs contain up to 5 milligrams of mercury, which is quite a small amount; compare that to older home thermostats and mercury fever thermometers, which contain from 500 to 3,000 milligrams. But given that nearly 300 million CFLs were sold in the U.S. in 2007, according to the Wall Street Journal, it can still be a concern. In several states tossing CFLs in the trash is even illegal”
Web site The Daily Green has some great advice for what to do with your spent CFLs. You should take them to your community’s hazardous waste collection site, or if that’s not an option you can recycle them through a program like Sylvania’s RECYCLEPAK program.

There is a great article online today at the Environmental Leader that offers five tips to cutting energy costs at home and at your business. Among the items suggested include determining how much you can save by doing an audit. There are several free Web tools available including Industrial Energy Audit’s tool that bases potential energy savings on annual energy spend.
There are eight key areas — heating and cooling systems, hot water heaters, washers and dryers, lighting, refrigerators, electronics, dishwashers and miscellaneous (cell phone chargers, home security systems, wall-mounted vacuum cleaners, etc.) — where home owners can reduce energy vampires that include coffee makers, cell phone chargers, cable boxes and computers.
Of course, replacing your windows with Renewal By Andersen is a great way to reduce your energy costs as well.
